Rebuilding Referral Mindshare After Changing Brokerages

I changed brokerages in November, and the awkward part is not the move itself — it is realizing that a good chunk of my past clients probably still think of me as part of my old team’s brand instead of as their long-term real estate resource.

For context, I’m in Phoenix, 7 years in, mostly move-up buyers and families relocating from California. My database is about 420 people: past clients, vendors, local contacts, and a few warm-but-not-ready leads. A lot of my closed business came through the previous team’s branding, so I’m trying to reintroduce myself before spring listing season without sending a bland “exciting news, I moved!” email.

My current thought is a smaller, tracked outreach sequence: personal text or email first, a short neighborhood-specific market note, then offer to update their home value or talk through insurance/property tax changes. Only if the conversation opens naturally would I mention referrals.

    Direct version:
“Hi Sarah, I’m reaching out because I’ve moved to a boutique brokerage and I’m reconnecting with past clients before the spring market. If you know anyone thinking about buying or selling in Phoenix this year, I’d be grateful for the introduction.”

    Softer version:
“Hi Sarah, I was looking at recent sales near your neighborhood and thought of you. Values have shifted a bit since you bought, and insurance/tax questions are coming up a lot right now. Happy to send you a quick equity update if useful — no agenda, just wanted to be a resource.”

The second feels more like me, but I also don’t want to be so indirect that no referral conversations happen. I’m trying to avoid anything that feels like a mass blast or random spam link dump like https://aviamasters-games.org/, https://baccarat-games-in.com/, https://icefishgame.org/.

I’d like to generate 8-10 real referral conversations, but I’m planning to measure replies, referral mentions, CMA requests, and coffee/lunch meetings rather than just “sent to 420 people.”

For those who have changed brokerages or left a team brand, what worked best? Home anniversaries, annual equity reviews, vendor intros, client appreciation events? And how did you word the referral piece without making it feel self-serving?
