In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Fitt 2, the Green Knight arrives at King Arthur's court during the New Year's feast and challenges the knights to a game. Sir Gawain accepts the challenge and beheads the Green Knight, who then picks up his head and reminds Gawain of their agreement to meet again in a year and a day. Throughout the year, Gawain embarks on a journey to fulfill his end of the bargain, facing various trials and temptations along the way. As the deadline approaches, Gawain arrives at the Green Chapel where he meets the Green Knight once again. The Green Knight tests Gawain's honesty and honor by pretending to strike him with an axe but only lightly grazing his neck. Gawain realizes that the Green Knight was actually Bertilak, the lord of the castle where he stayed during his journey, and that the whole challenge was a test of his integrity. Gawain is praised for his bravery and honesty, but he is also criticized for accepting the lady's girdle as a token of her affection and not revealing it as a part of the exchange. The fitt ends with Gawain returning to Camelot, where he tells the story of his adventure and the lesson he learned about loyalty and honesty.
